The Viet Cong had build up a large and widely spread tunnel system which was very useful for their success in the Vietnam War. It was established during the war against the French rulers and offered the fighters protection, accommodation and a measure for the supply with weapons and food. These tunnels were important and so the Americans tried to destroy them with dynamite and poison. However, they were not successful in doing this because the system covered a web of several hundred kilometres from Laos to Vietnam.
