Today there exist many dangers to our surroundings, but probably the most serious, becouse it can destroy our environment and cause damage to our health, is pollution. This is caused mainly by the exhaust gases from road and air traffic and the fumes which are emitted by the chimneys of many factories. There are however other causes. Lakes and rivers are being polluted by the detergents used for washing clothes and the seas and oceans are being increasingly contaminated by the disastrous oil slicks resulting from the running aground of huge oil tankers.
The energy problem can also be described as an environmental problem as the source of energy which is most likely to give us abundant energy in the future, nuclear power, is by no means absolutely safe. One of the greatest problem is how to dispose of the large amounts of atomic waste.
Another danger to the environment is the construction of houses and roads, as much land is needed for this often whole woods and large areas of farmland must be cleared to make room for six-lane motorways or twenty-storey skyscrapers. Such areas as the Alps are at present, suffering from immense exploitation through the building of new hotels, guest houses, ski lifts and so on.
