The early resistance against American policy in Vietnam was centred in groups that had earlier opposed issued like the development of the nuclear or hydrogen bomb. The focus of protest groups shifted when the nascent anti war movement began to condemn the United States for using napalm and chemical warfare agents in South Vietnam. Sensing that the growing unpopularity of the draft was a point of vulnerability in the Johnson administration, in May 1964 a radical group called the M-2-M (May 2 Movement) held demonstrations in San Francisco, New York and other cities. Meanwhile a wave of radical politics began to sweep over the nations university and college campuses. The riots were stimulated by the racism and the arms race with the USSR. Over the time the counter culture developed its own language and even its own style of music based on Rock and Roll.
These hippies demonstrated against the war and wanted peace. The high costs of the military actions in Vietnam provoked more demonstrations.
