Mary Lennox lived with her parents in India. Her father worked hard and was never at home. Her mother was very beautiful and she liked to go out with her friends. So they had no time for her. The servant took care of her. She was often ill. One day she awoke and nobody took care of her. So she went into the garden and played with the flowers. Then she went to bed. She slept for a long time. When she got up a man told her that her parents were dead.
Mary had no family in India, so she went to England to her uncle Mr Archibald Craven's She went by ship. Mrs Craven's She went by ship. Mrs craven's servant, Mrs Medlock met Mary in London. They went by train to Yorkshire. The servant told her about Misselthwaite Manor. It was a very old house near the moor. Her uncle was a strange man. He was a hunchback. He was a sad unhappy man until he married a pretty woman. But when his wife died he was stranger again. Mary felt sorry for him.
Mary slept for a long time. It was dark when they got out of the train. They drove five miles across the moor. Then they arrived at a low house. Mrs Medlock took her to her two rooms. She had to stay in her room. She felt alone and frightened.
Mary woke up the next morning and a young servant whose name was Martha came in. She showed her the moor and told her that she loved it. But Mary didn't like black. Martha told her about her family and about her brother Dickon. He found a little horse in the moor. She told Mary about a closed garden.
She found a wall without a door. But she heart a singing robin in the garden behind. Later she met a man named Ben Weatherstaff. He was an old lonely man and had only one friend the robin of this closed garden. The bird and she becomes friends.
One morning when she woke up she felt hungry. Martha said that come from the fresh air. Mary went into the garden to play. She saw the robin and was full of joy. After dinner she sat by fire and asked Martha why Mrs Craven hate the secret garden. Martha told her the story! Mrs Craven sat under her beloved tree when suddenly a branch fell on her. Next morning she died. Since that day the garden was closed. Suddenly Mary heard a child crying. She was told by Martha that's the wind.
Outside it was a rainy day. Martha suggested to read a book. Looking for the Library she went through the whole house. Again she heard the strange sound. Mrs Medlock found her walking through the building and pulled Mary back to her room.
Two days later, when Mary woke up in the morning the weather had totally changed to sunshine She went into the garden and met Ben and two gardeners. She met again the robin near the wall of the secret garden. Suddenly she found a very old key there. Now she would be able to go in the secret garden whenever she likes, if she could find the door.
The family of Martha liked to hear about India and Mary. Martha's mother bought her a skipping rope. Mary easily learned skipping and showed her skill to Ben in the kitchen garden. In India she heard a lot of magic so when she suddenly found the hidden door in the wall she could not believe it at first. She looked behind her quickly, opened the door, and went inside the secret garden.
All the plants in the secret garden were brown and dead-looking. She noticed a lot of little green points which showed above the earth, so all the plants were not death. At least she started to work in the garden till lunch time. After lunch time Martha was asked for a little spade by Mary. She wanted to make a garden of her own. Martha decided to write a letter to her brother Dickon to buy a spade for Mary.
Every day she worked in the secret garden and she liked to be there. One day she was skipping in the kitchen garden when she met Dickon. He was playing a pipe and many animals where standing around him. Dickon brought her a spade and seeds. At first she didn't know what to say to him but she started talking about seed
and animals. Dickon wanted to see the garden. Mary showed him the secret garden and told him not to tell it
anyone.
