Her 7 sisters lived with different relatives because their parents were divorced before her mother died.
Later her father married his housekeeper, Joan Gustafson.
At the filming of Shanghai Surprise, in 1986, Madonna met her later husband Sean Penn, but they got divorced in 1989.
On 14th October 1996 she gave birth to her daughter Lourdes Maria.

On 11th August 2000 she got her second child, her son Rocco Ritchie.
The father is the English producer Guy Ritchie. They got married on 22nd December of the same year.
School
At first she had to go to a monastery, but because of the early death of her mother, she could change and visited a strict catholic high school.
She was a very good pupil.
She was allowed to dance as a young girl and continued at school.
Way to success
Dance
After leaving high school Madonna completed a dance education at the University of Michigan. After that she moved to New York where she worked with the famous choreographer Alvin Ailey.
But her carrier as a dancer was not really successful and she had to lead a rather unpretentious life.
A trip to Paris was also disappointing. So she moved back to Michigan.
Music
After her return to Michigan Madonna founded "The Breakfast Band" together with Dan Gilroy.
Her solo career started in1983. Sire Records published her first single Everybody for only 5000 dollar. The single was sold 250.000 times and became the third place in the dance charts.
In the same year her first album was published and the irresistible ascent to a star and idol for millions of people began. In the years 1983-2004 she published other successful hits like Don't tell me, What it feels like for a girl and American life.
Movies
Her first appearance as an actress was in 1985. She was given a part in Desperately Seeking Susan but the movie was not really a big success.
Her further movies like Shanghai Surprise in1986, Who\'s That Girl in 1987,
Dick Tracy in 1990 and Body Of Evidence in 1993 were also criticized by the media.
Her only success was Evita in 1996, a film of a musical by Andrew Lloyd Webber.
Image
She invents her style again and again by changing her clothes and hairstyle.
Madonna also knows how to provoke people. Her great video-clip of What it feels like for a girl was forbidden by MTV, because Madonna drives a sports car and the journey ends in a crash. But in her songs she also deals with serious themes, for example, religion. But she writes about love and her life, too. With her songs she wants to pass on her experience to other people and to express her feelings.
