Whoopi Goldberg
Whoopi Goldberg, who's real name is Caryn Elaine Johnson, was born in 1955 in New York City
This woman who says: "acting is my life's blood" wanted to be a performer from the very beginning of her life. But making her dream come true wasn't always easy for her. At the age of eight she started acting in a children's theatre. But by the time she reached high school, Whoopi lost her desire and vision, as she was hooked on drugs - But as she cleaned herself up she started acting again in different theatres in California. She gave birth to her daughter Alexandrea in 1974 and married, but less than a year afterwards they were divorced. Her acting was so good that she got the chance to perform her own show on the Broadway, with wich she later toured through the country and Europe and had great success - so much that her stage show was produced as a television series and sold on video. Her records drew Steven Spielberg's attention, who offered her a role in the movie "The Color Purple", which meant her international breakthrough. More than 50 movies, like "Ghost", "Sister Act" "Star Trek Generations" and "Corrina, Corrina" followed. This film and many others she made are talking about the immense racial discrimination that blacks had to suffer from in the past and sometimes still have. She was the first African American to host the Academy Awards, she is one of the few artist to win Oscar, Emmy, Grammy, Tony and Golden Globe for her work and she is also equally well known for her tireless humanitarian efforts on behalf of children, the homeless and the fight against AIDS. She had a kind of outrider role for black actors and showed everybody that you can realise your dreams if you really want to.
