TYPE OF BOOK: novel
SUBJECT: It is about the life of Celie, a black woman. She has to overcome being dependent
on others and racism. The novel also shows the relationship to her sister and how
her sister´s life develops. Just as, her relationship to Shug and how she influenced
to her life!
SETTINGS: in the South of USA, when: ?
CHARACTERS:
Celie: main character. She was raped by her father and beaten up by her
husband. She is a very shy and humbly person.
Mr.__: Celie´s husband. He is in love with Shug Avery.
Netti: Celie´s sister and the only person who really loves Celie. But they aren´t
allowed to have contact with each other's.
Shug Avery: She is a singer and loved by Mr.__ and Celie.
THE PLOT:
When Celie is fourteen years old she was raped by her father. After her mother died,
her father married her off to Mr.__.
Celie´s life with him was horrible, because she had to raise his children, she wasn´t
allowed to have her own opinion, was treated like a slave and beaten for no reason.
After a while Mr.__ found out that Shug Avery is ill. So he brought her home where
Celie had to take care of her. Celie liked to do so, because she immediately fell in
love with Shug.
When Shug found out that Mr.__ is beating Celie she started to help her.
I think, the idea that the Author had when she wrote this book was to show the situation of women in a certain society and how they can change their life if they really want to.
MY OPINION:
I really like this book for many reasons. First of all, Alice Walker showed how
difficult daily life can be for women - especially when they´re black. I also
found it very emotional how relationships between people were shown
- sometimes very brutal (Celie was raped: 1st from her father and then from her
husband) and then very loving (the relationship to her sister and then with Shug). Most of all, I found the end very impressing. Celie´s sense of self-worth and value as a woman and human being awoke. She was now a really strong person who had the courage to change!
