The beginning of the Australian Gold Rush was in 1851, when Edward Hargraves discovered the first gold nugget in a lake near Bathurst. The nugget he had found had weight of 4 kg and had a piece of quartz in it. Before his finding, Edward Hargraves had been looking for gold for two years, but without any success. Although the government wanted to avoid a Gold Rush like the californian one, because it was more and more gold found in places like Melbourne and Victoria, the number of immigrants increased to nearly 95.000 in 1852 and the population grew up to 1.200.

There were many people who immigrated to search for gold and had to pay a lot of money for their license, they also had no right to vote. In 1854 changed their problems, they didn\'t longer have to pay money for their license and they got the right to vote. In 1861 the Chinese built a so-called \"Gold Place\" , a place to collect the gold. This place was distroyed because the Chinese sent a lot of gold to China and the Australian lost a lot of money.
