History:
In the 16th and 17th century the spanish conquerors played an important role in the discovery and settlement of Spain´s colonies in the new world. In 1769 California became a colony after it had been discovered in 15 42. Two expedtions were sent from Spain, one by land and other by sea to sign it as their colony, because the Russians were about to settle there. Missionaries went there to convert the tribes of Red indians reacted strongly against this instrusion into their traditional way of live. their numbers became smaller; because white man`s diseases; against which they had little or no resistance. The missionaries biult missions in some valleys between San Francisco and San Diego. Christianity started to spread.
California passed into the control of mexico, in whose hands it remained for more than sixty years. In 1848 it was left to the U.S.A. and two years later it became the 31st state of the Union. The influence of Spain and Mexico still remains to this day- especially in place names and the architeture.
Los Angeles:
Los Angeles is one of the most important cities in the U.S.A., still looking to the future. It has got 2,8 milliones inhabitants an it's an economy - centre, fishing- and trade habour. One of L.A.'s suburbs is Hollywood.
It has many different landscapes: long and wide beaches, deserts, mountains and hills. Los Angeles presents more than any other American cities the myth of success.
San Francisco:
San Francicos is one of the most charming and beloved cities of America. Everywhere there is a sense of happy relaxion, of harmony and natural way of living. There are old Victorian houses with coloured facades and modern skycrapers with futuristic outlines. The Golden Gate Bridge is a part of this sity, too.
The Coast:
California has got long white sand beaches.Early in the morning there is a silence, which is only interrupted by rhythmic sound of the waves and the cries of the seabirds.
Big Sur: Coastline through San Diego, Long Beach, Santa Monica and San Francisco. There are rocky parts, where wild flowers grow and sandy beaches.
Point Lobos State Reserve: There live over 250 spiecies of animals.
Deserts:
Death Vally: Badwater (saltwaterpool) is the lowest point in the United States, it's about 280 feet about (80 metres) below sea level. It's first name was "Tomesha" ( the land of fire) from the Indians.
1849 Death Valley got it's today's name.
