Samuel Alexander Mendes was born on August 1, 1965. He is a British stage and film director born in Reading,Bernshire, England. He is the only child of a Portuguese Protestant father and a British Jewish mother.
His secondary education was at Magdalen College school, Oxford, and he later attented the University of Cambridge. As stage director , he is probably best known for his 1998 production of "Cabaret".In 1990 he joined the Royal Shakespeare Company directing a number of Shakespeare classics, and two years later, he went on to become artistic director of the reopened Donmar Warehouse in London.Critics noted the director`s ability to atract big-name talents seeking to prove their mettle, exemplified by Nicole Kidman`s daring, multi-character performance in his London and Broadway productions of "The Blue Room". As a film director , he is best known for his Film , "American beauty" , for which he won 5 Academy Awards including Best Picture and Best Director. In 2000 , Mendes was made a Commander of the British Empire.
Sam married on May 24, 2003 the English actress Kate Winslet. They live now in New York City.
